Student Support

Student Support comes in many forms
Student Support assists students with a variety of learning challenges. We seek to support students who need assistance whether through tutoring, organization and study skills, or connections to diagnostics and interventions for mild learning disabilities. Most of our students are supported in the regular curriculum, and interventions are aimed at helping them to succeed in the regular classrooms.

We use a study team approach in which the student's teachers, parents/dorm parents, and other appropriate team members come together to problem solve and form a plan to support that student's needs.

Most often, if additional outside assistance is given, it is during the student's study hall time and students are generally fully included in the general academic program, with modifications to the curriculum objectives being the exception, rather than the rule.

RVA Counseling Department

RVA Counseling Department
RVA has an active Counseling Department consisting of trained professionals that seek to assist students in the area of psychological and emotional needs.  The RVA counselors work in consultation with Tumaini Counseling Center in Nairobi for psychiatric needs/concerns and can serve as a referral base for staff. Through the RVA counseling department, trained individuals are always ready and available to offer students guidance on personal and/or emotional issues.  If these issues do arise, every effort will be made to treat each individual with dignity and respect and avoid breaches of confidentiality.  However, parents and RVA administration will be informed if there are serious threats of physical harm to self or others or suspected physical or sexual abuse.  In some circumstances, parents may be requested to come and spend time at RVA helping their child to work out emotional or personal issues.  This is especially important in the areas of eating disorders and self-injurious behavior.  The RVA counseling policy and procedures are available upon request of the parent.  All counseling is always carried out from a Christian perspective.

Student Health
The Student Health Services of Rift Valley Academy provide seven-day-a-week, twenty-four hour care for our students while school is in session. Staffed by missionary nurses, physical therapists, and a doctor, the Student Health Services utilize a twenty bed on-campus facility as well as the medical, surgical, lab and x-ray services of the Kijabe hospital, a two hundred bed general hospital, to meet the medical needs of our students to ensure they stay healthy and in school.

Arcade

The Academy Arcade is the on campus "duka" for student supplies.  We carry all of the necessary things needed for class and school work such as loose leaf paper, binders, poster board, pens pencils, PE shirts and so forth.  An assortment of personal hygiene products are also available, mainly for boarding students.  We are able to take film into town to be developed as well as have prints made from digital media.  Once a week we sell non-academic products (read: Ice Cream and soft drinks) on a cash only basis.  All school related products are charged to parents accounts and if parents have given permission, air time for cell phones may also be charged to parents accounts.

Travel Office

The RVA Travel Coordinator sees to any arrangements needed for our out of country students via plane, shuttle and bus.  We see to arrival & departure transport, coordinating mid-term travel, and working with parents as they make bookings for their children throughout the year.
